Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

Austria’s Best Hidden Gem – NYE in Wolfgangsee is such a magical spot, especially if there’s snow. The town has a little market, serving gluhwein with bonfires spread about. Come midnight the firework show over the lake is incredible. The best part? The crowds are minimal, so you can actually enjoy the start to the new year.

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Bio means Organic- the Austrians love their local and organic (or Bio, as they call it) food. They tend to eat what's in season locally and support smaller, organic farms. Even hotel buffet breakfasts will brag about being completely Bio. This is something I absolutely love about Austria!
2
Christmas Markets- the markets in Germany tend to get all the hype and while they are wonderful, I also think the ones in Austria are! Vienna has multiple markets throughout the city, Salzburg as well & Innsbruck's markets are set with the backdrop of the Alps!
3
Carry Cash- cash is still king, especially if you venture outside the larger cities. Towns in the Alps or restaurants along hiking trails may only accept cash, so be sure to carry some Euros--just in case 🙂
4
Restaurant Hours- although many restaurants are open all day, the kitchens typically close between 2pm-6pm. During this time you can usually order drinks and cakes, but proper meals are not served. To avoid a hungry afternoon, be sure to get lunch before 2pm!

What can I expect from Austria?

Peaceful mountain towns, picturesque lakes, incredible local food and so much more! You will feel incredibly safe, in this clean and well-organized country.
