Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

Bulgaria’s Best Hidden Gem – the Seven Rila Lakes are glacial lakes in the Rila mountain range. The beautiful color of the lakes combined with pure natural surroundings, make them a dream destination for hikers!

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Cash is King- make sure to always have cash, as many places still do not accept card. We visited a couple bars in Sofia that were cash only, so outside of the capital I'm sure cash is even more crucial. The best rate for getting Bulgarian Lev is with your debit card at a bank in Bulgaria.
2
Walking Tour- one of the best ways to learn about a city and country is through a walking tour. The free walking tours are a great way to see the main sights of the city (don't forget to tip!) but the themed tours are my favorite. Sofia has a great Communist Era Walking Tour--I learned so much about Bulgaria's history!
3
Come Hungry- eating at restaurants, even in the capital, is super cheap! You can try typical Bulgarian food or just about any international cuisine you could desire--and all of it won't hurt your wallet!
4
Try the Wine- red wines are the most common Bulgarian wines. They are good and extremely inexpensive! Don't dismiss the local wines when you're in Bulgaria, give them a try and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised--I know I was!

What can I expect from Bulgaria?

Natural beauty, amazing food and an incredibly inexpensive trip!
