Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

Italy’s Best Hidden Gem – Giglio Island, a small island off the coast of Porto San Stefano. You can easily get there by ferry for a day trip, but it would truly be special to spend a night or two. It’s not too far from the wine villages of Tuscany, but definitely not on the radar of international travelers.

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Take the Trains- Italy's trains are fairly inexpensive and connect all the big cities of the country. It's a more relaxing way to travel than flying, with the added benefit of taking in the scenery!
2
Don't Drive in Palermo- hands down the craziest city to drive in! The cars seemingly have no rules and the traffic is insane. Not to mention parking is very expensive. Driving around the rest of Sicily is fine but I would try to avoid driving in Palermo, if possible.
3
Visit Lake Garda- skip over Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, in favor of the larger but less famous: Lake Garda. It's a beautiful lake, but without all the frills and high price tags that the more famous lakes have.
4
Visit in Shoulder Season- given that Italy is such a popular country for tourism, it's in your best interest to visit outside of the high summer season. Prices will be lower and everything will be way less crowded!

What can I expect from Italy?

A large country filled with countless cities worth visiting. Be sure to bring your appetite, as the food is incredible! You won’t run out of things to do or places to visit in Italy!
