Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

North Macedonia’s Best Hidden Gem – the lakeside town of Ohrid is gem, but more specifically the view from the Church of St. John. I think that if this church was in another European country, it would be overrun with tourists! The lake itself is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Travel by Bus- if you want to visit the capital of Skopje and the lakeside town of Ohrid, you can take a direct bus between the two cities. Tickets can be purchased online in advance but you will need to arrive early to get a physical ticket from the bus station.
2
Wizzair- travel between many European countries and North Macedonia can be very inexpensive with the budget airline, Wizzair. If you want to see Skopje and Ohrid, you can even fly into one city and out of the other!
3
Inexpensive- the cheapest European country I've ever been to. You can enjoy a delicious 3 course meal, with alcoholic drinks for 2, for less than $20!
4
Carry Cash- the local currency is the Macedonian Denar and many tours, taxis and even restaurants only accept cash. The best way to get Denar is with your debit card from a bank ATM in North Macedonia.

What can I expect from North Macedonia?

An undiscovered country with delicious food and so much history to learn!
