Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

Serbia’s Best Hidden Gem – the old Bohemian quarter of Belgrade, specifically Skadarlija. The cobblestone streets and beautiful buildings make strolling these streets a nice addition to your trip to the city. Be sure to stop off at a cafe or restaurant here!

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Border Crossing- be prepared to wait...our car was completely searched...every. single. bag! This was a lot considering we had started our roadtrip skiing in Austria, so we had a roof rack with skis and such. This was our first invasive border crossing search, but the border officer was a jolly man!
2
Smoking- you can still smoke inside here, even inside restaurants. Luckily a number of restaurants have a covered indoor/outdoor area, so I would recommend eating here if you aren't a smoker.
3
Meat Eater's Paradise- Serbians love their meat platters! They are delicious but also it's quite a heavy cuisine, and obviously not an easy place for vegetarians or vegans.
4
Great Speakeasy Scene- the city of Belgrade has a fantastic speakeasy scene and the cocktails are about $5-6! If you like craft cocktails, this is a great city to visit! Beware of the smoking indoors though...

What can I expect from Serbia?

An often overlooked and inexpensive country. Serbia can easily be added to your Balkan trip, if you’re looking to experience a place that most foreign tourists don’t visit.
