Planning Resources:

Accommodation – I always check these three websites to see my options when booking hotels or apartments to stay in : Booking.com, Airbnb.com and Expedia.com (includes VRBO & Hotels.com)

Tours – When searching for activities and tours, I use Viator and Get Your Guide

Transportation – I stalk Google Flights for both domestic and international flights. For trains, Eurail for multi-day passes and Trainline for one-off train tickets. I often use Enterprise for rental cars, but will go with any reputable company that offers a good deal.

Slovakia’s Best Hidden Gem – the High Tatras Mountains. Here you can enjoy a ski. holiday or hiking in the summer. A beautiful mountain range, with lakes and high peaks, its untouched nature makes it a true gem!

Alex’s Insider Tips

1
Christmas Markets- you might not think of Slovakia when you think of Christmas Markets, but the market in Bratislava is worth a visit! It's not too big but offers more flavors of gluhwein than I've seen at any other market. Plus the food options were extensive and delicious!
2
Day Trip from Vienna- a quick train ride away from Vienna, makes it easy to see Bratislava, while on a trip to Vienna. Or vice versa 🙂
3
Good Train Connections- the capital, Bratislava, is well connected to other popular European cities, such as Vienna and Prague. If you're traveling Europe by train, then its worthwhile to add Slovakia to your agenda!
4
Pay with Credit Card- cards are becoming more widely accepted in Slovakia. I could even pay by card everywhere at the Christmas market stands (you can't even do this in Germany)!

What can I expect from Slovakia?

An inexpensive country, with plenty of nature, castles and of course the beautiful city of Bratislava!
